Kalmar unveils K-Motion solution for reachstackers: All the power, 40% less fuel

2015 Press
CARGOTEC CORPORATION, PRESS RELEASE, 10 JUNE AT 1.30 PM (EEST)

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has unveiled its new K-Motion solution at TOC Europe exhibition in Rotterdam on 10 June 2015. Kalmar K-Motion is a new drive train system, embedded into the programming of the Kalmar Gloria reachstacker, increasing efficiency and productivity by elevating uptime, ergonomics and safety, while reducing fuel consumption and running costs.

The Kalmar K-Motion solution increases precision in both low and high drive speed modes, with the smart control system splitting the power to increase overall drive and lift efficiency. The fine-tuned joystick also delivers more precise driving. As a result, daily operations are made safer, so operators can focus on the task ahead and react quickly, avoiding accidents, damaged cargo and driver fatigue.

As the less efficient torque converter has been replaced by hydrostatic technology, the throttle works as an actual speed throttle. The combination of hydrostatic and mechanical technologies delivers a more efficient transmission and allows for a downsized engine. This reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, giving reductions of up to 40% without compromising drive and lift power.

The first equipment that was launched with the K-Motion technology is the Kalmar Gloria DRG450 reachstacker with 6-6.5m wheel base, for container, intermodal and industrial handling. The maximum engine speed 1700rpm is designed to function with a lower decibel output. Therefore, the addition of K-Motion improves noise reduction even further, increasing the comfort of drivers and people nearby. Its greener design and lifetime value provide savings daily.

Stefan Johansson, Director, Sales and Marketing, Kalmar Reachstackers and Empty Container Handlers, said: "Over the last ten years we have been on a quest to find the best solution for our reachstackers, and now we have arrived at our goal and are delighted to present K-Motion, the most efficient way to achieve major savings, increase productivity, and reduce fuel consumption and emissions with our reachstackers."

"Now more than ever, terminals are under pressure to increase their capacity, cut costs and improve the footprint of everyday operations. Within Kalmar we have a long-term commitment to developing efficient sustainable technology, which includes the possible application of K-Motion across our range of reachstackers in the future."
